Immersed in the green countryside in the province of Ravenna, Cotignola was once the homeland and feud of captains of fortune. Today the town relives its history with interesting and curious theatrical and artistic events along the streets of the town, such as the Sagra della Segavecchia or the Palio di Alberico da Barbiano.
The palace, built in 1376 by Giovanni Attendoli, father of Muzio Attendolo Sforza, was declared a National Monument for Art and History in 1892, but this did not save it from destruction. Faithfully rebuilt respecting the original harmonious structure in 1961, it retains original architectural elements incorporated into some of its parts, which fortunately remained intact after the collapse. In particular, the terracotta rose window with the Sforza coat of arms from which, among other things, the current coat of arms of the city was taken, was relocated above the entrance to the Palace. In the internal courtyard of the palace you can still admire the graceful columns of the loggia and various other valuable pieces, such as the funerary stele of Caius Varius.
The Varoli Artistic Museum is divided into various adjoining spaces: Scuola Arte e Mestieri, Varolìs school, Casa Varoli, Casa Magnani, and Palazzo Sforza.
"From Museum to Landscape" is a project that, since 2018, has been drawing a map through a path of painted walls that branches out across the country.
The Acuto Tower was built in 1376 by Sir John Hawkwood, a famous English leader, whose name had been italianized into Giovanni Acuto.
The historic walk of Liberation Nel Senio della Memoria, on 25 April, unravels for 18 km, along the Senio river, between Cotignola and Alfonsine; the journey can be done on foot or by bicycle. Narrations, music, art, a journey to take together dedicated to the courage to embrace the ideas of freedom. The Senio is a river of Memory and only if you walk slowly along it can you breathe and understand it. In the last war, the Senio river divided the front for six months: on one side the Nazi-fascist troops, on the other the partisans and local populations. The Senio doesn't just tell the story of the war. It also tells the countryside landscapes and the stories of those who live there. Stories of floods, work and taxes. And now it has also become a river of theatrical performances and narratives. The walk on April 25th is a walk through the memories and history of a liberation and of a river that crosses villages and cities, with performances, shows, concerts.
In a natural landscape that tells of the visible and the invisible, the magical Straw Bale Arena returns every year in July. Days and evenings of unmissable events including storytelling, music and art. In the Cotignole countryside, where the Senio river meets the Emiliano Romagnolo Canal, the Primola association organizes the Arena delle Bale, the only straw amphitheater in Romagna. The natural setting is that of a large river floodplain illuminated by the moon and stars, dominated by an orderly grove of acacias that form the backdrop to the stage. An ephemeral Greek arena immersed in the countryside. Concerts, theatre, narratives, land art, explorations and poetic encounters, which are born on the edge of straw and imagination.
The city of Cotignola is famous for the art of papier-mâché, thanks to the local artist Luigi Varoli. In the museum dedicated to him, it is possible to understand his artistic evolution, from painting to sculpture to papier-mâché. You will be enchanted by the large masks depicting local characters from the artist's era, created specifically for the traditional Segavecchia Festival. It is possible to experiment with this art with your own hands: build puppets, dolls, masks and small sculptures, understanding the magic of this poor and precious material at the same time, or be able to "see" details better thanks to drawing.
